“walk a mile in my boots”
Each day hundreds of people in Adelaide wake up in the cold - many of them in our parks and streets, some in cars or squats, some in sheds. Winter is particularly tough.
Fortunately these people have Hutt Street Centre. Six days a week there is a hot breakfast and lunch waiting for them. They can have a warm shower, a cup of tea, a change of clothes.
There are people who care and can help them get back on their feet: a nurse, legal clinic and other professional services. An education and training program to teach them new skills to help them overcome homelessness and discover a more positive future.
“walk a mile in my boots” is an awareness and fundraising campaign, designed to help people understand what it’s like to walk in the boots of a homeless person in Adelaide.
For one hour over 3,000 people walk a mile, on a cold wintry morning, along Hutt Street to the South Parklands where a simple and typical Hutt Street Centre BBQ breakfast is provided.
It’s a wonderful community event and great opportunity to support social justice in Adelaide in a fun and active way. Getting rugged up and walking through the east end of Adelaide together with your friends and family and thousands of other like minded people early on a chilly winter’s morning in August then enjoying a lovely breakfast at the end of the walk in the
South parklands. A great way to start the day!
